“It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts… it is to teach them to think,… and always to think for themselves.”

– Robert Hutchings (1882-1945) Scientist

Greetings and Welcome to the DeSmet Public School Website.  DeSmet has a proud tradition of providing an excellent education to the students in our community.  In 2017 DeSmet made the transition to a STEM school (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to complement the surrounding business and their needs for a skilled, educated workforce.  Over the next several years the anticipated growth will increase our student body.  To accommodate this growth we are starting the initial phases of a needs analysis to expand our facility with a gym and added classrooms.  This is a very exciting time to be part of the Padre Tradition.

2017-2018 school year will be my second year at the helm of DeSmet.  There will be many positive changes your children will encounter upon their return.  Our focus on STEM curriculum will coincide with our effort to increase literacy with our students.  New curriculum was purchased k-8 to help facilitate this transition for your child’s education.  DeSmet is now an MBI School.    This is a school-wide positive behavior initiative that focuses on character and responsibility.   We are also now a School-Wide Title School.  This means that we will have checks and connect initiatives in our core classes to help our students excel, and if they are struggling, to catch the issues quickly and keep them on track as college and career graduates of high school.   As a piece de resistance, we have our new website.

On our new website, you will find current news and events, important information about our school, your child’s teacher lesson plans and contact information.  If you have any questions on this new site, please feel free to call our school and let us know.

This next year will be an exciting adventure not only for your child but for our community.  Take a moment to stop by and see some of the new changes, and a few new faces.

Thank you,

Matt Driessen, Principal

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.
